California!!
So i know this post is about a month too late, but i had to post it. :]
California: June 7th-16th, 2007
So on our first day, we left Las Vegas at 10:30, and our plane landed about an hour after the delay…The airport security was okay with my diabetic supplies and my apple juice I had to carry, which I put in a quart sized bad and wrote on it, “I NEED THIS! Juvenile Diabetic.” and they understood, it was totally fine. I disconnected my insulin pump and put it in my purse, so that it wouldn’t alarm and set off one of the detectors, and i walked through and it was all good. :] (yay!) We landed after about an hour, which was cool….and found our lugguge, rented a car…we had a hard time choosing the SUV….there was this one car that was so cute! But it never would have fit all our luggage, so we stuck with a Nissan Armada…the car is huge, but really nice! We were very indecisive! After getting lost on the freeway exits, we finally found Disney Way and found ourselves going around in a square for a while…and finally saw the hotel!! Yes!!!!!! We checked in, and our rooms were ready, and so we got changed, had some lunch, and went to the pool…and layed on the lounge chairs at the Disneyland Hotel and had a very very relaxing afternoon.
Somehow between the time of (trying)to get a tan, and going in the pool after i had detached my pump, my site had come out! I still don’t know where the rest 0f the site is, haha. And i didnt know it until we were walking back to the hotel around 5 to get changed. So i hadnt had insulin for probably about a half hour, and so i missed my basal. My blood sugar was almost 400! I changed my site twice in the span of 3 hours, hoping the last one would be okay, since the second one really hurt!!
We picked up our dad at the airport around 7:30 and was driving around about an hour before then. I was just waiting for all that insulin to kick in when finally i tested and it was 125. (ahhh!!) That was a relief, becuase if it didnt come down, i’d have to use another new bottle of insulin, and take another shot. :[
We had dinner and went back to the hotel…it was sooo cold!
Friday…..What a relaxing day at the pool…and walking around Downtown Disney was a lot of fun…looking at all the shops and everything!
We drove to Newport Beach and picked up the keys to the rental house a little early, unpacked our stuff, and went to lunch at the “Stuft Surfer” you have no idea how much i was looking forward to sitting on the beach and feeling the sand between my toes.
it was nice.
Halfway thru lunch, Aunt Mama and Unlce B called and they were there already! and so they met us for lunch, and we all went back to the house, and helped them unload their car! We all got ready for dinner and walked down the boardwalk to find a restuarant, and all sat upstairs, outside, under the heat lamps and had an awesome dinner together.
We walked back to the house and hung out, relaxed, and unpacked some more! haha.
I love the third floor!! its soo cool, the outside of it looks like a doll house!! ![]()
On Sunday, Aunt Mama and i got up pretty early and were out of the house on our rollerblades by 8:30….and had a nice hour of exercise while drinking our hot lattes. It was so cool to be able to get up, and exercise like that! Like in Las Vegas, its just too hot to spend even an hour outside, so Newport Beach and the weather and everything made it so easy to get 6 hours of exericse! i loved it, i barely ever bolused for lunch! hehe.
We came back to the house, waited for everyone to get ready, and we all rollerbladed down the boardwalk and back, had lunch, and sat on the beach for a while. I changed my site alot, it kept coming out! I tested so much when we were in Newport, all the exercise was great, Jackie always held my apple juice incase i was low while we were rollerblading. ![]()
So, pretty much every day, we went rollerblading or bike riding, sat on the beach (fell asleep and got a real bad sunburn) and ate at the Stuft Surfer, and made dinner or went out, and hung out together, and sat on the third floor listening to music or a good movie, there were flat-screen tv’s and the speakers were in the walls!!! haha. ![]()
Then on Thursday night, we went to dinner with our family and picked up our friend, Ashley, at the Airport and so she spent the next few days with us. That was a lot of fun!!! ![]()

I was just diagnosed last weekend and spent the last 4 days in the hospital trying to get my BS under control. Now I’m trying to learn more about diabetes and your site came up in one of my internet searches.
I’ve learned a lot about the clinical issues related to this disease, though I know I have a lot more to learn. Still, there’s something on this page that I didn’t realize I had been wanting to learn. There’s a big gap between all of the information about treating diabetes and living with diabetes.
Thanks for blogging about that, and thanks for putting a big, bright shining face on it. I really needed that.
